When you need to travel cross-country but would rather not drive, you can always try a long-distance taxi service. You can choose from the taxi service’s fleet of vehicles and SUVs – so why not go ahead and choose the car which can give you the most comfortable ride? Of course, you can always be driven in the comfort of your own vehicle as well.
First thing to consider is leg room. You will probably be riding in the car for around 8-12 hours in a day, stopping only for meals and to sleep. You will feel cramped if you do not have ample space for your legs. If the passenger is elderly or is pregnant, ample leg room is most important; as is stopping more often to stretch the legs and walk around a bit. Sitting down in a car for extended periods of time can lead to edema.
Second, consider the conditions of the road. The smoothest roads may be difficult to drive a car on when it is raining or when it is snowing. Often, an SUV is a better choice especially if the road cuts through mountains. An SUV is built for less than optimal road conditions. It will give a smoother ride on rough roads.
Third, consider the amenities in the car. If you are traveling with children, a video screen in the back seat can keep them entertained. If you are traveling with an elderly person, perhaps the music on the radio may be a little too “modern” for them to appreciate. You can actually pop in a CD of classical music or instrumental music. If you need to work while on the cross-country road trip, consider a car with wifi so that you can read and send emails; chat and even engage in video conferences.
Fourth, consider vehicles with individual seats instead of bench type seats so that you can recline your seats and take a nap. However, if you are traveling with children, a bench-type seat is best for installing a carseat or a booster seat for them. Bench-type seats are best if you need to put your feet up during the trip.
Fifth, if you need to bring medication or baby formula, perhaps an SUV or minivan with a mini refrigerator may be best for you. Some medications (such as insulin for diabetics) need to be refrigerated. If you are going on a cross-country trip with an elderly person who is taking insulin shots, you will need to consider a vehicle with space for a cooler if it does not have a mini refrigerator.
A long distance taxi service does not need to be just another long car ride. Most long distance taxi companies help you plan your route not only so that you can save up on fuel cost but also so that you can pass through interesting landmarks, museums and natural wonders. These long distance drivers are often trained to also act as your tour guide.
You can actually plan your long distance car trip so that you are sure to pass through tourist attractions. This will make the trip memorable and fun. The scenery out the window can get monotonous if your car trip will take you three or four days. Plan on making periodic stops while on the road so that you can buy souvenirs, take good pictures, eat local delicacies and experience local culture. These stops will recharge your batteries and it will keep boredom at bay especially when you are traveling with children.
Instead of eating at fast food restaurants, consider buying meat and hotdogs for grilling at a local park or picnic grove. You can also buy fruits in season and fresh vegetables from roadside markets and eat them there. This will give you a chance to stretch and walk around. If you bring a ball or a Frisbee, it will give you time to play with your children and bond with them. If you are traveling with your pet dog, a nice stick can be thrown and fetched. The exercise will improve their mood and it will help them nap in the car – that will certainly be better for your nerves.
